I remember it like it was yesterday… September 11, 2001. I was a Junior in college. I had just woken up
and was getting ready to go to class. I got a call from one of my best friends who lived in Australia. He said “are you okay”. I said “what are you talking about?” He said “Chrissi, turn on your TV, you guys are being attacked.”
I turned on my TV and saw the disturbing images from the World Trade Center. I finished getting ready and caught the bus that takes students on campus. I stood there quite and listened as everyone around me talked about what was happening. I couldn’t speak… It all seemed like a dream.
All but one of my classes was canceled. The professor tried to teach but looking around the classroom no one was listening. All we could think about were those horrific images and all the lives lost.
Where were you when you heard about the 9/11 attacks.
Sorry about posting so late. I was in Coushatta all day covering a boating accident and I couldn’t get wireless connection there.. so I had to wait until I got back to the office.
In case you haven’t heard the tragic news two boaters (a 16 year old girl and 25 year old man) are still missing. The boat they were in capsized early this morning. Four others who were also in the boat managed to swim to safety. Dozens and dozens of friends and family members have been at the boat launch in Coushatta all day. They were holding out hope that their loved ones would be found. But after searching all day there’s still no sign. I always knew small towns come together during a tragedy but to see it was amazing. The local grocery store donated food to feed all the friends, family members and searchers. Red River Sheriff Johnny Ray Norman told me at one point they had so many residents bringing out their boats to help search he had to turn them away. It’s so hard covering these kind of stories but to see how people come together like this makes it a little easier. I can’t imagine what the families are going through right now. But I want to let them know my thoughts and prayers are with them.
